The New Cotse Proxy

We're beta testing a new "proxy" on Cotse. To use it, you should simply set your browser preferences, and every time you visit a website, your browser will connect to the Cotse Proxy that will anonymize your browser from prying eyes. Basically hiding your IP address and browser information.

NOTE: This is in beta-test mode. Errors and lapses of this proxy service may occur. We're in the process of developing this feature. If you notice any problems, please report them to helpdesk@cotse.net.

Security Note: Websites containing some javascripts and/or applets may try to connect back to the server. This may prompt you for your username/password. It's attempting to open another browser session. This could be a security hazard and *could* reveal your information to the target server. To protect your anonymity, you should decline this request.

Website Scripting: Some servers use website scripting that isn't supported by the proxy. For example, some website navagation tools/aids are incapable of showing through the proxy. If you must view the site in question, disable the proxy settings in your browser or configure your browser to bypass the proxy on a per-site basis. For example, in Internet Explorer, you can configure "Advanced Settings" in the Proxy Configuration Tool. Doing either of these will disable the proxy for the site in question and you will not be anonymous.

Depending on the browser you're using, you should define the proxy settings in the preferences:

The Clients

Phoenix (0.4): Click Tools, Preferences, Connection. Select "Manual proxy configuration", then for "HTTP proxy" insert "tusk.cotse.net" and specify as Port: "8080". Click "Ok" at the bottom.

Lynx(2.8.4): search in the file lynx.cfg the row containing "http_proxy", decomment and modify it in this way: http_proxy:tusk.cotse.net:8080/

Links (0.9.6): in the file ~/.links/links.cfg modify the row for the proxy: http_proxy tusk.cotse.net:8080

Netscape: Menu Edit - Preferences, in the left column open "Advanced". At this point click on "Proxies" and select "Manual proxy configuration", then click on "View" and at the item "HTTP proxy" insert "tusk.cotse.net" and specify as Port: "8080". Click "Ok" at the bottom.

Opera 5: Menu File - Preferences, click on the section "Network", then select the menu "proxy server", click on HTTP, insert "tusk.cotse.net" as the server name and "8080" as the port.

Explorer 4: Menu View, select "Internet Options", select "Connection", click on "Use a proxy server", insert "tusk.cotse.net" as "Address", and "8080" as "Port".

Explorer 5/6: Menu Tools, select "Internet Options", select "Connections", select the type of connection you use, if you're using DIALUP to connect to the Internet, select DIALUP, if you're using a LAN, select "LAN Settings", click on "Use a proxy server" and insert "tusk.cotse.net" as "Address", and "8080" as "Port".

Mozilla (1.2a): Menu Edit - Preferences, in the left column open "Advanced", click on "Proxies". At the right, click on "Manual proxy configuration" and as "HTTP proxy" insert "tusk.cotse.net" and as "Port" insert "8080". Click "Ok" at the bottom.

Galeon (0.10.6): Menu Settings - click on "enable proxy", then always in the menu "Settings" click on "Preferences"; in the window on the left click 2 times on "Advanced" (last item at the bottom), then on "Network". At this point, in the right session insert as "HTTP proxy" "tusk.cotse.net" and as port change "8080" in "8080" and click "Ok" at the bottom.

Konqueror (2.1.1): Menu Settings - click on the last item "Configure Konqueror". In the window that will open click on the item "Proxies" on the left, then at the right click on "Use proxy" and insert as "HTTP proxy" "tusk.cotse.net" and change the port from "8080" to "8080".

When you start using the proxy, you will be prompted for your username/password. The username/password is the same as your Cotse Login User I.D. and Password.

Additional Notes:

Please note, java runs on YOUR local machine (we don't block it because some want it) and because of this can break your anonymity. With our proxy, java trying to connect back to a server will cause another authentication prompt. Deny it if anonymity is important (click cancel until it stops prompting).

If anonymity is very important, disable java in your browser. There is no way to guarantee anonymity if you let applications run on your local machine from the web. We cannot rewrite compiled applications on the fly, so we cannot address malicious behavior within compiled applications. You run them at your own risk. This is also true for our web based proxy.

If you run into a site that requires cookies to login, let us know and we'll add it to our list of allowed cookie sites. If you find any other issues, please let us know.

Improve your privacy: Stunnel

To improve your privacy you need to encrypt the connection between you and the server tusk.cotse.net. For more information about this, click here.

If you find this "How To" in error or you have difficulties with the instructions, please email helpdesk@cotse.net.
